एतस्मिन्नन्तरे गेहं मातुलस्य युधाजितः /
प्रययौ भरतः प्रीतः शत्रुघ्नेन समन्वितः // //१ //
ētasminnantarē gēhaṁ mātulasya yudhājitaḥ /
pRayayau bharataḥ pRītaḥ śatRughnēna samanvitaḥ // // 1 //
ஏதஸ்மின்னந்தரே கே³ஹம்ʼ மாதுலஸ்ய யுதா⁴ஜித: /
ப்ரயயௌ ப⁴ரத: ப்ரீத: ஸ²த்ருக்⁴னேன ஸமன்வித: // // 1 //
In the meantime, Prince Bharata went happily for a visit to his uncle YudhAjit's palace with SatRughna. /1/
തതഃ പ്രകൃതിഭിഃ സാകം മന്ത്രയിത്വാ സ ഭൂപതിഃ /
അഭിഷേകായ രാമസ്യ സമാരേഭേ മുദാഽന്വിതഃ // //2 //
ततः प्रकृतिभिः साकं मन्त्रयित्वा स भूपतिः /
अभिषेकाय रामस्य समारेभे मुदाऽन्वितः // //२ //
tataḥ pRakr̥tibhiḥ sākaṁ mantRayitvā sa bhūpatiḥ /
abhiṣēkāya rāmasya samārēbhē mudā'nvitaḥ // // 2 //
தத: ப்ரக்ருʼதிபி⁴: ஸாகம்ʼ மந்த்ரயித்வா ஸ பூ⁴பதி: /
அபி⁴ஷேகாய ராமஸ்ய ஸமாரேபே⁴ முதா³(அ)ந்வித: // // 2 //
At that time, MahArAjA daSaratha decided, after consulting with his ministers, upon SRee-rAma's coronation as the future monarch with His heart full of joy. /2/
കൈകേയീ തു മഹീപാലം മന്ഥരാദൂഷിതാശയാ /
വരദ്വയം പുരാ ദത്തം യയാചേ സത്യസങ്ഗരം // // 3 //
कैकेयी तु महीपालं मन्थरादूषिताशया /
वरद्वयं पुरा दत्तं ययाचे सत्यसङ्गरं // // ३ //
kaikēyī tu mahīpālaṁ mantharā dūṣitāśayā /
varadvayaṁ purā dattaṁ yayāchē satyasaṅgaraṁ // 3 //
கைகேயீ து மஹீபாலம்ʼ மந்த²ராதூ³ஷிதாஸ²யா /
வரத்³வயம்ʼ புரா த³த்தம்ʼ யயாசே ஸத்யஸங்க³ரம்ʼ // 3 //
King daSaratha's queen KaikEyi's mind was made vicious by the (evil woman) ManttHarA and (therefore) KaikEyi asked the king who was committed to truthfulness to fulfill two promises (Varam-s) that He had made to her in the past. /3/
വനവാസായ രാമസ്യ രാജ്യാപ്ത്യൈ ഭരതസ്യ ച /
തസ്യാ വരദ്വയം കൃച്ഛ്രം അനുജജ്ഞേ മഹീപതിഃ // // 4 //
वनवासाय रामस्य राज्याप्त्यै भरतस्य च /
तस्या वरद्वयं कृच्छ्रं अनुजज्ञे महीपतिः // ४ //
vanavāsāya rāmasya rājyāptyai bharatasya cha /
tasyā varadvayaṁ kr̥ccHRaṁ anujajñē mahīpatiḥ // 4 //
வனவாஸாய ராமஸ்ய ராஜ்யாப்த்யை ப⁴ரதஸ்ய ச /
தஸ்யா வரத்³வயம்ʼ க்ருʼச்ச்²ரம்ʼ அனுஜஜ்ஞே மஹீபதி: // 4 //
With great sorrow in His heart the King was impelled to agree to KaikEyi's two demands: One, to send SRee-rAma for a forest exile and two, to make Bharata the ruler of the kingdom (instead of SRee-rAma, the legitimate heir). [This was due to the king's commitment to truthfulness in promises made.] /4/
രാമം തദൈവ കൈകേയീ വനവാസായ ചാദിശത് /
അനുജ്ഞാപ്യ ഗുരൂൻ സർവാൻ നിര്യയൗ ച വനായ സഃ // //5 //
रामं तदैव कैकेयी वनवासाय चादिशत् /
अनुज्ञाप्य गुरून् सर्वान् निर्ययौ च वनाय सः // //५ //
rāmaṁ tadaiva kaikēyī vanavāsāya chādiśat /
anujñāpya gurūn saRvān niryayau cha vanāya saḥ // //5 //
ராமம்ʼ ததை³வ கைகேயீ வனவாஸாய சாதி³ஸ²த் /
அனுஜ்ஞாப்ய கு³ரூன்ʼ ஸர்ʼவான்ʼ நிர்யயௌ ச வனாய ஸ: // //5 //
Immediately KaikEyi ordered SRee-rAmA to go for an exile in the forest (as she knew that the subjects will all be in support of their beloved SRee-rAma who might pose a threat to her own son's illegitimate ascension to power). Saying goodbye to all His elders, SRee-rAma began His journey to the forest. /5/
ദൃഷ്ട്വാ തം നിർഗ്ഗതം സീതാലക്ഷ്മണശ്ചാനുജഗ്മതുഃ /
സന്ത്യജ്യ സ്വഗൃഹാൻ സർവേ പൗരാശ്ചാനുയയുർ ദ്രുതം // /6/
दृष्ट्वा तं निर्ग्गतं सीतालक्ष्मणश्चानुजग्मतुः /
सन्त्यज्य स्वगृहान् सर्वे पौराश्चानुययुर् द्रुतं // /६/
dr̥ṣṭvā taṁ niRggataṁ sītā lakṣmaṇaśchānujagmatuḥ /
santyajya svagr̥hān saRvē paurāśchānuyayur drutaṁ // /6/
த்³ருʼஷ்ட்வா தம்ʼ நிர்ʼக்³க³தம்ʼ ஸீதாலக்ஷ்மணஸ்²சானுஜக்³மது: /
ஸந்த்யஜ்ய ஸ்வக்³ருʼஹான்ʼ ஸர்ʼவே பௌராஸ்²சானுயயுர்ʼ த்³ருதம்ʼ // /6/
Seeing SRee-rAma leaving for the forest, SRee-seeta and SRee-lakshmaNa accompanied Him. All the citizens also gave up their homes and immediately followed (their beloved) SRee-rAma (as they loved Him more than everything else). /6/
വഞ്ചയിത്വാ കൃശാൻ പൗരാൻ നിദ്രാണാൻ നിശി രാഘവഃ /
വാഹ്യമാനം സുമന്ത്രേണ രഥം ആരുഹ്യ ചാഗമത് // /7/
वञ्चयित्वा कृशान् पौरान् निद्राणान् निशि राघवः /
वाह्यमानं सुमन्त्रेण रथं आरुह्य चागमत् // /७/
vañchayitvā kr̥śān paurān nidrāṇān niśi rāghavaḥ /
vāhyamānaṁ sumantRēṇa rathaṁ āruhya chāgamat // /7/
வஞ்சயித்வா க்ருʼஸா²ன்ʼ பௌரான்ʼ நித்³ராணான்ʼ நிஸி² ராக⁴வ: /
வாஹ்யமானம்ʼ ஸுமந்த்ரேண ரத²ம்ʼ ஆருஹ்ய சாக³மத் // /7/
In the night, when the tired and sad citizens (AyoddhyA) were asleep, SRee-rAghava left them behind by getting onto the chariot driven by the minister, sumantRa and proceeded to the forest (to fulfill His promise to His father).
ശൃങ്ഗിവേരപുരം ഗത്വാ ഗംഗാകൂലേഽഥ രാഘവഃ /
ഗുഹേന സത്കൃതസ്തത്ര നിശാം ഏകാം ഉവാസ ച // /8/
शृङ्गिवेरपुरं गत्वा गंगाकूले ऽथ राघवः /
गुहेन सत्कृतस्तत्र निशां एकां उवास च // /८/
śr̥ṅgivēra puraṁ gatvā gaṁgākūlē 'tha rāghavaḥ /
guhēna satkr̥tastatRa niśāṁ ēkāṁ uvāsa cha // /8/
ஸ்²ருʼங்கி³வேரபுரம்ʼ க³த்வா க³ங்கா³கூலே (அ)த² ராக⁴வ: /
கு³ஹேன ஸத்க்ருʼதஸ்தத்ர நிஸா²ம்ʼ ஏகாம்ʼ உவாஸ ச // /8/
SRee-rAma (along with SRee-seetA and SRee-lakshmaNa) reached the town of SR^n*givEram on the banks of river GangA and stayed there overnight accepting the hospitality of Guha.
സാരഥിം സന്നിമന്ത്ര്യാസൗ സീതാലക്ഷ്മണസംയുതഃ /
ഗുഹേനാനീതയാ നാവാ സന്തതാര ച ജാഹ്നവീം // /9/
सारथिं सन्निमन्त्र्यासौ सीतालक्ष्मणसंयुतः /
गुहेनानीतया नावा सन्ततार च जाह्नवीं // /९/
sārathiṁ sannimantRyāsau sītālakṣmaṇasaṁyutaḥ /
guhēnānītayā nāvā santatāra cha jāhnavīṁ // /9/
ஸாரதி²ம்ʼ ஸன்னிமந்த்ர்யாஸௌ ஸீதாலக்ஷ்மணஸம்ʼயுத: /
கு³ஹேனானீதயா நாவா ஸந்ததார ச ஜாஹ்னவீம்ʼ // /9/
At that point, SRee-rAma took leave of the minister sumantRa who was their charioteer, and with His wife and brother, crossed river SRee-GangA in a boat rowed by Guha.
ഭരദ്വാജമുനിം പ്രാപ്യ തം നത്വാ തേന സത്കൃതഃ /
രാഘവസ്തസ്യ നിർദേശാച്ചിത്രകൂടേ ഽവസത് സുഖം // /10/
भरद्वाजमुनिं प्राप्य तं नत्वा तेन सत्कृतः /
राघवस्तस्य निर्देशाच्चित्रकूटे ऽवसत् सुखं // /१०/
bharadvāja muniṁ pRāpya taṁ natvā tēna satkr̥taḥ /
rāghavastasya niRdēśāt Chitrakūṭē ' vasat sukhaṁ // /10/
ப⁴ரத்³வாஜமுனிம்ʼ ப்ராப்ய தம்ʼ நத்வா தேன ஸத்க்ருʼத: /
ராக⁴வஸ்தஸ்ய நிர்ʼதே³ஸா²ச்சித்ரகூடே (அ)வஸத் ஸுக²ம்ʼ // /10/
(On the other shore), SRee-rAma met with and paid respects to MahaRshi SRee-BharadvAja who hosted the visitors very hospitably. According to BharadvAja's advice, SRee-rAma began to live happily in (an area known as) ChitRakooTam in the forest.
അയോധ്യാം തു തതോ ഗത്വാ സുമന്ത്രഃ ശോകവിഹ്വലഃ /
രാജ്ഞേ ന്യവേദയത് സർവം രാഘവസ്യ വിചേഷ്ടിതം // /11 //
अयोध्यां तु ततो गत्वा सुमन्त्रः शोकविह्वलः /
राज्ञे न्यवेदयत् सर्वं राघवस्य विचेष्टितं // /११ //
ayōdhyāṁ tu tatō gatvā sumantRaḥ śōkavihvalaḥ /
rājñē nyavēdayat saRvaṁ rāghavasya vichēṣṭitaṁ // /11 //
அயோத்⁴யாம்ʼ து ததோ க³த்வா ஸுமந்த்ர: ஸோ²கவிஹ்வல: /
ராஜ்ஞே ந்யவேத³யத் ஸர்ʼவம்ʼ ராக⁴வஸ்ய விசேஷ்டிதம்ʼ // /11 //
The minister sumantRa then went back to AyoddhyA in a very sad mood and described SRee-rAma's actions and experiences to King daSaratha.
തദാകർണ്യ സുമന്ത്രോക്തം രാജാ ദുഃഖവിമൂഢധീഃ /
രാമ രാമേതി വിലപൻ ദേഹം ത്യക്ത്വാ ദിവം യയൗ // /12 //
तदाकर्ण्य सुमन्त्रोक्तं राजा दुःखविमूढधीः /
राम रामेति विलपन् देहं त्यक्त्वा दिवं ययौ // /१२ //
tadākaRṇya sumantRōktaṁ rājā duḥkha vimūḍhadhīḥ /
rāma rāmēti vilapan dēhaṁ tyaktvā divaṁ yayau // /12 //
ததா³கர்ʼண்ய ஸுமந்த்ரோக்தம்ʼ ராஜா து³:க²விமூட⁴தீ⁴: /
ராம ராமேதி விலபன்ʼ தே³ஹம்ʼ த்யக்த்வா தி³வம்ʼ யயௌ // /12 //
Listening to what Sree-sumantRa had said, the Kings heart and mind (dhee) became overwhelmed by deep anguish. Crying out loud and calling, "rAmA! rAmA!" the king's soul left the body and left for svaRgam.
മന്ത്രിണസ്തു വസിഷ്ഠോക്ത്യാ ദേഹം സംരക്ഷ്യ ഭൂപതേഃ /
ദൂതൈരാനായയൻ ക്ഷിപ്രം ഭരതം മാതുലാലയാത് // /13 //
मन्त्रिणस्तु वसिष्ठोक्त्या देहं संरक्ष्य भूपतेः /
दूतैरानाययन् क्षिप्रं भरतं मातुलालयात् // /१३ //
mantRiṇastu vasiṣṭhōktyā dēhaṁ saṁrakṣya bhūpatēḥ /
dūtairānāyayan kṣipRaṁ bharataṁ mātulālayāt // /13 //
மந்த்ரிணஸ்து வஸிஷ்டோ²க்த்யா தே³ஹம்ʼ ஸம்ʼரக்ஷ்ய பூ⁴பதே: /
தூ³தைரானாயயன்ʼ க்ஷிப்ரம்ʼ ப⁴ரதம்ʼ மாதுலாலயாத் // /13 //
According to Sage VasishTTHa's advice, the ministers preserved the king's dead body, and sent messengers to bring back Bharata (and SatRughna) from his uncle's house.
ഭരതസ്തു മൃതം ശ്രുത്വാ പിതരം കൈകയീഗിരാ /
സംസ്കാരാദി ചകാരാസ്യ യഥാവിധി സഹാനുജഃ // /14 //
भरतस्तु मृतं श्रुत्वा पितरं कैकयीगिरा /
संस्कारादि चकारास्य यथाविधि सहानुजः // /१४ //
bharatastu mr̥taṁ śRutvā pitaraṁ kaikayīgirā /
saṁskārādi chakārāsya yathāvidhi sahānujaḥ // /14 //
ப⁴ரதஸ்து ம்ருʼதம்ʼ ஸ்²ருத்வா பிதரம்ʼ கைகயீகி³ரா /
ஸம்ʼஸ்காராதி³ சகாராஸ்ய யதா²விதி⁴ ஸஹானுஜ: // /14 //
From (mother) KaikEyi's words, Bharata knew of his father's death, and he performed the rituals such as cremation with his younger brother.
അമാത്യൈ: ചോദ്യമാനോ ഽപി രാജ്യായ ഭരതസ്തദാ /
വനായൈവ യയൗ രാമം ആനേതും നാഗരൈഃ സഹ // /15 //
अमात्यै: चोद्यमानो ऽपि राज्याय भरतस्तदा /
वनायैव ययौ रामं आनेतुं नागरैः सह // /१५ //
amātyai: chōdyamānō 'pi rājyāya bharatastadā /
vanāyaiva yayau rāmaṁ ānētuṁ nāgaraiḥ saha // /15 //
அமாத்யை: சோத்³யமானோ (அ)பி ராஜ்யாய ப⁴ரதஸ்ததா³ /
வனாயைவ யயௌ ராமம்ʼ ஆனேதும்ʼ நாக³ரை: ஸஹ // /15 //
Although Bharata was strongly encouraged by the ministers to take up the rule of the kingdom(which had become kingless), he (declined and) went to the forest with the townsfolk of AyOddhyA to bring SRee-rAma back from the forest (to take over as King).
സ ഗത്വാ ചിത്രകൂടസ്ഥം രാമം ചീരജടാധരം /
യയാചേ രക്ഷിതും രാജ്യം വസിഷ്ഠാദ്യൈ: ദ്വിജൈഃ സഹ // /16 //
स गत्वा चित्रकूटस्थं रामं चीरजटाधरं /
ययाचे रक्षितुं राज्यं वसिष्ठाद्यै: द्विजैः सह // /१६ //
sa gatvā chitRakūṭasthaṁ rāmaṁ chīrajaṭādharaṁ /
yayāchē rakṣituṁ rājyaṁ vasiṣṭhādyai: dvijaiḥ saha // /16 //
ஸ க³த்வா சித்ரகூடஸ்த²ம்ʼ ராமம்ʼ சீரஜடாத⁴ரம்ʼ /
யயாசே ரக்ஷிதும்ʼ ராஜ்யம்ʼ வஸிஷ்டா²த்³யை: த்³விஜை: ஸஹ // /16 //
Going to the forest, Bharata (met and) begged SRee-rAma along with Sage VasishTTHa and other Initiated Sages to take over the protection of the kingdom -- to SRee-rAma who had already had matted hair and was wearing rugged forest-type clothes and had taken up permanent residence in ChitRakooTam (to fulfill His exile).
"ചതുർദശ സമാ നീത്വാ പുനരൈഷ്യാമ്യഹം പുരീം" /
ഇത്യുക്ത്വാ പാദുകേ ദത്വാ തം രാമഃ പ്രത്യയാപയത് // /17 //
"चतुर्दश समा नीत्वा पुनरैष्याम्यहं पुरीं" /
इत्युक्त्वा पादुके दत्वा तं रामः प्रत्ययापयत् // /१७ //
"chatuRdaśa samā nītvā punaraiṣyāmyahaṁ purīṁ" /
ityuktvā pādukē datvā taṁ rāmaḥ pRatyayāpayat // /17 //
"சதுர்ʼத³ஸ² ஸமா நீத்வா புனரைஷ்யாம்யஹம்ʼ புரீம்ʼ" /
இத்யுக்த்வா பாது³கே த³த்வா தம்ʼ ராம: ப்ரத்யயாபயத் // /17 //
Saying that "I will come back to the capital city after spending fourteen years of forest exile," SRee-rAma gave His wooden shoes to Bharata and sent him back (so that Bharata could keep them on the throne as symbol for SRee-rAma).
ഗൃഹീത്വാ പാദുകേ തസ്മാദ് ഭരതോ ദീനമാനസഃ /
നന്ദിഗ്രാമേ സ്ഥിതസ്താഭ്യാം രരക്ഷ ച വസുന്ധരാം // /18 //
गृहीत्वा पादुके तस्माद् भरतो दीनमानसः /
नन्दिग्रामे स्थितस्ताभ्यां ररक्ष च वसुन्धरां // /१८ //
gr̥hītvā pādukē tasmād bharatō dīnamānasaḥ /
nandigrāmē sthitastābhyāṁ rarakṣa cha vasundharāṁ // /18 //
க்³ருʼஹீத்வா பாது³கே தஸ்மாத்³ ப⁴ரதோ தீ³னமானஸ: /
நந்தி³க்³ராமே ஸ்தி²தஸ்தாப்⁴யாம்ʼ ரரக்ஷ ச வஸுந்த⁴ராம்ʼ // /18 //
With a deeply saddened heart, Prince Bharata took his brother's shoes with him and (instead of returning to AyoddhyA) took care of governing the land from a place known as nandi-grAmam (keeping SRee-rAma's shoes as a symbol of Kingship on the throne).
രാഘവസ്തു ഗിരേസ്തസ്മാദ് ഗത്വാത്രിം സമവന്ദത /
തത്പത്നീസ്തു തദാ സീതാം ഭൂഷണൈഃ സ്വൈരഭൂഷയത് // /19 //
राघवस्तु गिरेस्तस्माद् गत्वात्रिं समवन्दत /
तत्पत्नीस्तु तदा सीतां भूषणैः स्वैरभूषयत् // /१९ //
rāghavastu girēstasmād gatvātRiṁ samavandata /
tatpatnīstu tadā sītāṁ bhūṣaṇaiḥ svairabhūṣayat // /19 //
ராக⁴வஸ்து கி³ரேஸ்தஸ்மாத்³ க³த்வாத்ரிம்ʼ ஸமவந்த³த /
தத்பத்னீஸ்து ததா³ ஸீதாம்ʼ பூ⁴ஷணை: ஸ்வைரபூ⁴ஷயத் // /19 //
SRee-rAma went from ChitRa-kooTam to visit and pay respects to MahaRshi atRi. At the ASRamam, the MahaRshi's wife gave SRee-seetA her own ornaments and decorated the Princess.
ഉഷിത്വാ തു നിശാം ഏകാം ആശ്രമേ തസ്യ രാഘവഃ /
വിവേശ ദണ്ഡകാരണ്യം സീതാലക്ഷ്മണസംയുതഃ // /20 //
उषित्वा तु निशां एकां आश्रमे तस्य राघवः /
विवेश दण्डकारण्यं सीतालक्ष्मणसंयुतः // /२० //
uṣitvā tu niśāṁ ēkāṁ āśRamē tasya rāghavaḥ /
vivēśa daṇḍakāraṇyaṁ sītālakṣmaṇasaṁyutaḥ // /20 //
உஷித்வா து நிஸா²ம்ʼ ஏகாம்ʼ ஆஸ்²ரமே தஸ்ய ராக⁴வ: /
விவேஸ² த³ண்ட³காரண்யம்ʼ ஸீதாலக்ஷ்மணஸம்ʼயுத: // /20 //
Staying overnight with MahaRshi atRi, SRee-rAma went with His wife and brother into the dense forest called daNDakam.
ഇതി ശ്രീരാമോദന്തേ അയോധ്യാകാണ്ഡഃ സമാപ്തഃ //
इति श्रीरामोदन्ते अयोध्याकाण्डः समाप्तः //
iti śrīrāmōdantē ayōdhyākāṇḍaḥ samāptaḥ //
இதி ஸ்ரீராமோத³ந்தே அயோத்⁴யாகாண்ட³: ஸமாப்த: //
Thus ends the chapter called AyOddhyA-kANDam of SRee-rAmOdantam
